Baltimore Gas and Electric Gradually Restoring Natural Gas Service
to Overlea-Fullerton Area Restoration Effort Expected to Last Into
Late Friday BALTIMORE, Oct. 26 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Baltimore
Gas and Electric Company (BGE), a subsidiary of Constellation
Energy (NYSE:CEG), today announced that it has restored natural gas
service to roughly 650 residents and businesses in the
Overlea-Fullerton neighborhood of Baltimore County. The utility
also announced that it expects most of its remaining customers
whose service was interrupted this past weekend to be restored by
late Friday. The process of restoring natural gas service has been
slowed by water which extended into gas pipes and gas-fed
appliances of customers' homes and businesses. To date, BGE has
found nearly 80 instances of damaged appliances, a number that is
expected to rise as BGE crews focus on the most heavily impacted
area of the affected neighborhood. "We are making progress and
continue to appeal to our customers for their patience as we work
to restore gas service to their homes and businesses as quickly and
safely as possible," said E. Frank Bender, vice president of gas
operations for BGE. "While the process of clearing our gas mains of
water is time-consuming, especially in low-lying areas where water
collects in the system, we are making headway, restoring service to
those customers whose gas-fed appliances have not been damaged by
water. Where we can relight pilot lights, we will do so, but at no
time will we compromise the safety of our customers." As of early
this morning, BGE has pumped 60 percent of the volume that is
believed to have entered the gas mains. In order to effect full
restoration and reintroduce natural gas into the system, mains must
be free of water. In those instances where a gas-fed appliance is
found to be damaged by water, BGE will replace the meter at the
home. Customers are further advised to have gas lines and damaged
appliances in their homes and businesses inspected by a licensed
contractor, and to work with their insurance companies to address
any financial claims. BGE cannot make repairs to customers'
appliances. Service restoration has mostly been in the area west of
Belair Road just south of the Baltimore Beltway where gas mains
have been fully drained. BGE is working in a southeasterly
direction and is finding higher levels of water in the main because
of the area's downhill terrain. Assisting BGE in relighting
appliance pilots are personnel from several neighboring utilities,
including Washington Gas Light, Columbia Gas, Conectiv Power
Delivery, Philadelphia Gas Works and Pennsylvania Power and Light
Company (PPL). BGE is a member of Constellation Energy (NYSE:CEG),
a Fortune 500 integrated energy company based in Baltimore.
