Datapipe, a leading provider of managed hosting and IT services, announced today a significant expansion of its green initiatives. Through a strategic relationship with Constellation NewEnergy, Datapipe's Somerset One data center, located in New Jersey, will now run on 100 percent renewable electricity. Datapipe will utilize Green-e Energy certified renewable energy certificates through Constellation NewEnergy's NewMix(SM) Wind energy solution to match electricity consumption at its data center, while maintaining its diverse and redundant connections to the main power grid.

"Converting to 100 percent renewable electricity sources is a big win for our clients, our company and our community. The impact is significant and is expected to result in an initial reduction of more than 8.5 million pounds of carbon emissions," Allen added.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency estimates that data centers account for 1.5 percent of the nation's electricity consumption. As the demand for digital resources continues to rise, the EPA estimates this figure will increase by 12 percent annually.

Renewable energy certificates (RECs) represent the environmental benefits of electricity generated from wind, solar or other renewable power. Eligible facilities that generate renewable power are issued RECs that can be sold to help support the development and operation of renewable energy generation.
