Constellation Energy Nuclear Group’s Calvert Cliffs Nuclear Power Plant Unit 1 Completes Planned Refueling Outage

Constellation Energy Nuclear Group’s Calvert Cliffs Nuclear
Power Plant Unit 1 in Lusby, Md., returned to service Tuesday
following the completion of a planned refueling and maintenance
outage. The refueling outage began Feb. 20 at 7:20 p.m. and was
completed on March 22 at 3:29 a.m.
During the outage, workers performed approximately 9,000
inspections and maintenance activities on a variety of plant
components and systems. These activities included replacing a third
of the reactor’s fuel. Many of the activities performed during the
outage cannot be performed while the unit is running and all are
designed to ensure the continued safe and reliable production of
electricity.
“The completion of this outage is an investment in clean,
reliable and emissions-free electricity, as well as part of our
commitment to continued safe operation,” said George Gellrich, vice
president of Calvert Cliffs Nuclear Power Plant. “It takes a lot of
planning and teamwork to safely complete an outage. We received the
support of more than 900 workers from throughout southern Maryland
and beyond as well as from our other Constellation Energy Nuclear
Group plants in New York.”
Since Unit 1’s previous refueling outage in 2008, the unit was
online producing electricity for 685 days. Shorter refueling
outages and longer operating cycles benefit the consumer by
optimizing nuclear energy’s benefits as a reliable source of
emissions-free electricity.
Unit 2 continues to operate at full power.
Constellation Energy Nuclear Group owns Calvert Cliffs Nuclear
Power Plant, which is located approximately 50 miles southeast of
Washington, D.C. The station’s two nuclear energy units can produce
a total of more than 1,750 megawatts at full power – enough
electricity to power more than 1 million homes or about 20 percent
of Maryland’s electricity needs.
