Constellation Energy (NYSE:CEG) today announced that its R. E.
Ginna Nuclear Power Plant in Ontario, N.Y., has completed a
scheduled refueling outage. During the refueling outage, Ginna
became the third nuclear power plant in the United States to enter
its licensed period of extended operations.
The refueling outage was completed in 20 days and 29 minutes --
the shortest duration on record for Ginna. The previous best was
achieved in the spring of 2008 when Ginna performed its refueling
outage in 20 days and 22 hours. Shorter refueling outages and
longer operating cycles benefit the consumer by optimizing nuclear
energy’s benefits as a reliable source of emissions-free
electricity.
“Safe and reliable plant operation is achieved through our
commitment to continuous improvement,” said John Carlin, Ginna site
vice president. “Constellation Energy employees at Ginna, across
our generation fleet and teammates from outside the company all
deserve to share in the credit for our strong performance during
this refueling outage.”
Ginna passed a major milestone while refueling. At midnight on
Sept. 18, 2009, Ginna’s original operating license, granted Sept.
18, 1969 by the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission, was set to
expire, but that license was renewed in 2004; therefore, the plant
entered the period of licensed extended operation under its renewed
license. In 2002, Ginna applied for, and was later granted, an
extended operating license for another 20 years.
“Throughout the history of the plant, we have continuously
improved processes and performance, all the while focused on
maintaining our exceptional record of providing safe, reliable,
emissions-free electricity,” said Carlin. “Nothing less will
suffice.”
