Alltel (NYSE: AT) is donating $1 million to help recovery efforts on the Gulf Coast led by former Presidents George H.W. Bush and William J. Clinton. The donation will support the Bush-Clinton Katrina Fund, which is contributing to short- and long-term relief efforts in the affected states. The company also has contributed more than $500,000 to the Alltel Charitable Fund to support employees who were affected by Hurricane Katrina. In addition, Alltel has pledged to match employee contributions to the internal fund, a match that is expected to reach about $250,000. "Our company and our employees experienced first-hand the tremendous losses left behind in the wake of Hurricane Katrina," said Scott Ford, Alltel president and CEO. "Extraordinary circumstances call for an extraordinary response to help our communities, and Alltel is proud to take part in the recovery efforts led by Presidents Bush and Clinton." The Bush-Clinton Katrina Fund was established to fill the unmet needs that arise in the recovery effort. The fund will coordinate efforts with the governors of Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama, and also with established national and local organizations, who are working directly with those affected, in identifying and funding these gaps. "I want to thank Alltel for its generous support on behalf of the victims of this devastating disaster," said President William J. Clinton. About 250 Alltel employees across the Gulf Coast region were affected by Hurricane Katrina. Alltel is using its Charitable Fund to distribute cash to employees to cover basic needs such as food, clothing and shelter. The company also has set up housing and a long-term support network in Little Rock for families displaced by the hurricane. Alltel is a customer-focused communications company with more than 15 million customers in 36 states and nearly $10 billion in annual revenues. Alltel, NYSE: AT www.alltel.com
