Affiliated Computer Services, Inc. (NYSE: ACS) today announced it will provide the Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority (VTA) with a Real Time Transit Information System (RTI) providing up-to-date bus arrival/departure information to riders via the web, telephone systems, and on dynamic message signs at selected stops and Light Rail Vehicle (LRV) Stations.

Bus and LRV arrival and departure information will be displayed on dynamic message signs located along selected bus stops as well as LRV stations. Specific signs will be equipped with an Americans with Disabilities (ADA) compliant audio component allowing passengers with disabilities to hear what is being displayed on the sign.

The RTI system will also be integrated to the San Francisco Bay Area 511 traveler information system that will allow individuals to obtain travel information from their homes, businesses or mobile phones and via ACS’ SmartTraveler Plus web portal for passengers to view and sign up for arrival information via email or SMS messaging.

"When the real time project is completed, our customers will be able to receive immediate bus and light rail arrival time by phone or PDA to better plan their trips,” said Michael T. Burns, Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority General Manager.

The new RTI system will maximize previous investments that VTA has made in its existing OrbCAD Computer Aided Dispatch (CAD) and Automatic Vehicle Location (AVL) system provided by ACS and its signs already installed in LRV stations. The RTI system will be tightly integrated with the existing system to provide updated real-time schedule information using global positioning system (GPS) reports from buses and LRV. This will provide the best bus/LRV arrival and departure information and special messages for customers.

“ACS’ partnership with the Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority will allow them to leverage its investment in OrbCAD system and convey real time schedule information as one means of growing ridership and making service more attractive to the public,” said David Kachemov, Senior Vice President and Managing Director of ACS Transportation Solutions Group.”
