NYSE Euronext's (NYX) New York Stock Exchange reported program
trading amounted to about 34% of NYSE's average daily volume, as
overall volume continues to be lighter than the past year.
For the week ended July 10, NYSE showed program trading amounted
to 33.6% of the NYSE average daily volume of 2.34 billion shares,
or 786.8 million program shares traded per day. The previous
52-week average was 945.3 million program shares traded, or 26.2%,
of 3.61 billion.
A week earlier, program trading amounted to 37.9% of NYSE
average daily volume of 2.15 billion shares, or 813.9 million
program shares traded per day.
Program trading encompasses a wide range of portfolio-trading
strategies involving the purchase or sale of a basket of at least
15 stocks. In all markets, program trading by member firms averaged
2.73 billion shares a day during the week. As such, about 28.8%
took place on the NYSE.
