Clean Harbors Environmental Services, Inc. (Clean
Harbors)(NASDAQ: CLHB), the leading provider of environmental and
hazardous waste management services throughout North America, today
announced that it has received the Regional Directors Conservation
Award by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, in recognition of the
Companys pivotal role in the Southwest Louisiana wildlife recovery
effort, following the Gulf coast hurricanes of 2005. Hurricanes
Katrina and Rita caused significant damage to the National Wildlife
Refuges and our facilities throughout southwest Louisiana, said
Don Voros, Project Leader of the Southwest Louisiana National
Wildlife Refuge Complex. The scope and complexity of the recovery
effort to clean-up the wetlands was unprecedented. Working in
conjunction with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, U.S.
Environmental Protection Agency, U.S. Coast Guard, and Tennessee
Valley Authority, Clean Harbors managed more than 150 specialists
and carefully removed more than 12,700 hazardous material items and
other debris from 32,000 acres of marsh habitat at the Sabine,
Cameron Prairie and Lacassine National Wildlife Refuges. Using
specialized equipment such as marsh draglines, long- and
short-reach excavators, marsh buggies, jib crane airboats, pontoon
barges, mud boats, sleds, and double- or triple-engine airboats,
Clean Harbors crews collected items that ranged from 55-gallon
drums to 20,000-gallon oil production tanks and 30,000-gallon
oilfield storage tanks. Other items recovered included propane
tanks, gas and helium cylinders, and household hazard waste items
such as paint cans and cleaning supplies, tires, televisions,
computers, refrigerators, washers and dryers. The Company also
removed miscellaneous items such as all-terrain vehicles, jet skis,
boats, and transformers, which were found scattered throughout the
wetlands. We are proud to receive this prestigious award from the
U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and to be recognized for our
successful execution of the recovery project in the Sabine
wetlands, said David M. Parry, Executive Vice President of Sales
and Services. The receipt of the Regional Directors Conservation
Award reaffirms Clean Harbors capacity to undertake the most
sensitive and complex projects and underscores our ability to
perform even under the most challenging and adverse conditions.
As a result of Clean Harbors expertise in managing the clean-up
efforts on the ground, the five-member consortium assigned to this
project, was able to successfully complete the job both under
budget and within a shortened time frame, said Sam Hamilton,
Southeast Regional Director, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, who
presented the award. It takes extensive planning and specialized
equipment to remove debris from sensitive wetland areas devoid of
road access, but Clean Harbors managed the process safely and with
the least amount of disruption to the wetlands. As a result of
Clean Harbors successful efforts, the Service now can redirect
personnel and resources to the next phases of hurricane recovery,
and come one step closer to restoring the natural habitats of the
Sabine, Cameron Prairie and Lacassine national wildlife refuges.
