John Melanson, Academy Award-winning distinguished fellow with Cirrus Logic Inc. (Nasdaq: CRUS), is the recipient of the Texas Inventor of the Year Award, given annually by the State Bar of Texas, as chosen by the Bars Intellectual Property Law Section. Melanson received the award on June 22 during the State Bars Annual Meeting in San Antonio. Melanson, 54, has led a distinguished career that spans more than 30 years in the semiconductor and electronics industry and has been awarded more than 100 patents, primarily in audio and mixed signal technologies. In particular, Melanson pioneered the development of new signal processing technologies that were key to reducing power consumption in hearing aid applications. Extensions of this technology are commonplace today in products such as home theater receivers, portable audio players and other audio equipment. Melanson has earned numerous other patents relating to advances in audio quality and power consumption, and improvements in audio systems engineering. His accomplishments in this area include patents on distributed processing in digital audio mixing networks. Among its uses, this patented technology was used by Cirrus Logic to implement the public address system used within the U.S. Senate. Melanson, who received his first patent in 1976, was also awarded a Scientific and Engineering Award by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences in 2004 for his significant contributions to the evolution of digital audio editing for motion picture post-production. Each year I marvel at the breadth and depth of innovation we find within the state of Texas, wondering if we will continue to find inventors who will measure up to past recipients, said Andrew J. Dillon, chair, Inventor Recognition Committee, Intellectual Property Law Section, State Bar of Texas. This year our Inventor of the Year clearly meets this high standard. Texas is a hotbed of design creation and technology, which makes this award a coveted honor to me, said John Melanson. I have been fortunate to work with a number of talented people at Cirrus Logic and over a wide range of technologies. Its always rewarding to see the hard work and innovation come to fruition in new products that consumers and professionals can use in their day-to-day activities. Melanson, who joined Cirrus Logic in 1999, focuses his work on advanced product development. He resides in both Austin and Estes Park, Colo., and is a distinguished alumnus at the University of Colorado, holding a bachelor of science degree in electrical engineering and computer science.
