Rio Tinto said a plane en route to the company's Diavik diamond
mine crashed near Fort Smith in Canada's Northwest Territories,
killing some people on board.
"We are working closely with authorities and will help in any
way we can with their efforts to find out exactly what has
happened," said Chief Executive Jakob Stausholm.
A spokesman for the miner said some Rio Tinto workers had died
in the crash, but couldn't confirm how many. The Office of the
Chief Coroner in the Northwest Territories also said there had been
fatalities, but said it wouldn't provide additional information as
it sought to notify next of kin.
The premier of the Northwest Territories said the plane was
operated by Northwestern Air. The airline couldn't immediately be
reached for comment.
