AK Steel (NYSE: AKS) announced today that it has accepted an award
from the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) High Performance Computing
for Manufacturing (HPC4Mfg) Program. The HPC4Mfg Program's
$300,000 award will support the use of the DOE National
Laboratory’s advanced computing resources where the collaborative
research with AK Steel will take place to help drive innovation in
manufacturing processes.
Researchers from AK Steel will work in
collaboration with scientists from the Computational Engineering
Division of the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory to build a
Fast Acting Reduced Ordered Model (FA-ROM) to predict the
properties of a finished steel coil after hot rolling to continue
to improve product consistency, provide immediate feedback on
product quality, and to save time, money and energy by reducing
expensive industrial trials. This research also will
complement current Artificial Intelligence (AI) models used in the
manufacture of AK Steel's portfolio of innovative steel
products.
“AK Steel is proud to have the opportunity to
collaborate with the DOE and the National Laboratory and for the
use of its supercomputing facility to drive further excellence in
producing high quality steels,” said Roger K. Newport, Chief
Executive Officer of AK Steel. “This is another outstanding
example of the important work and collaboration of our AK Steel
experts to drive continued innovation in steelmaking.”
This is the third recent award AK Steel has
received from the DOE Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable
Energy Advanced Manufacturing Office to support innovative steel
research. The first, awarded in 2017, focused on
manufacturing new steels that provide increased efficiency in
high-frequency electric motors, and a second award in 2018 focused
on investigating novel low density steels in the laboratory, which
could ultimately be used in automotive structural
applications. All three awards underscore AK Steel’s
innovation and commitment to being a leader in next generation
steel product and process development.
