        Talvivaara pleased to announce first blast ceremony held on 1 April

Talvivaara Mining Company Plc is pleased to announce that yesterday it had its
first blast of ore at a small ceremony at the mine site in Sotkamo, Finland. The
first blast marked the beginning of the extraction of ore at the Talvivaara
mine.

The start of mining was one of the most important milestones in the mine
project, and it was achieved on timetable and on budget. The next key milestones
are the start of stacking and leaching of the ore in July and start of metals
production during the fourth quarter of 2008.
