LETTER TO:  GERMAN SMALLER COMPANIES INVESTMENT TRUST

COMPANIES ACT 1985, (AS AMENDED) SECTIONS 198 TO 210A DISCLOSURE OF INTEREST IN
SHARES.

In accordance with the above provisions we hereby give you notice that CIS
Pension Scheme Nominee Limited holds, as beneficial owner, 833,500 Ordinary
shares of German Smaller Companies Investment Trust as at the close of business
on 28 July 1999, this being 2.10% of the relevent issued share capital of
39,628,894.

The decrease in our percentage holding was as a result of the following
transaction:

CIS Pension Scheme Nominee Limited is a nominee of the Co-operative Insurance
Society Employees' Pension and Death Benefit Scheme and the entire holding is
held by it in trust for employees of the Co-operative Insurance Society Limited
who are from time to time members of the scheme.  No other arrangements or
agreements exist for any person to control or exercise any voting rights over
the shares held by CI Pension Scheme Nominee Limited.

German Smaller Companies Investment Trust Ordinary 25p shares at the close of
business on 28 July 1999 this being equal to 3.09% of the relevant issued share
capital of 39,628,894.  The decrease in our percentage holding was as a result
