                      RECRUITS SILICON DESIGN TEAM

             ACORN RECRUITS INDUSTRY LEADING SILICON DESIGN
                     TEAM FROM ST MICROELECTRONICS

Cambridge, UK, 15 December 1998:  Acorn Group plc (ACN) today
announced a major step forward in its drive into next generation
Digital TV systems with the recruitment of an industry leading
silicon design team and the establishment of a significant new
multimedia design facility in Bristol, UK.

The new facility, which will be fully operational by February 1
1999, fills in the one missing piece for Acorn which is now able
to offer a 'software on silicon' approach for next generation
multimedia devices.  The design team of seven has come from ST
Microelectronics, and will be led by Simon Knowles, the new Vice
President of Silicon Design at Acorn.

The facility, initially located in Aztec, West Bristol, represents
a significant investment by Acorn in the area of silicon design.
It will initially be operated by the seven-strong design team,
utilising the latest symbiotic tools and design stations, though
Acorn plans significant expansion for it in the near future.

Commenting on the announcement, Stan Boland, Chief Executive of
Acorn, said,

for consumer electronics companies in the exciting area of
