TOKYO—Nissan Motor Co. said it began legal proceedings Monday against a group that supports the U.K. leaving the European Union for its unauthorized use of the Japanese car maker's logo.

On Tuesday, Nissan said it took legal action in the High Court in London asking for an injunction to stop the "Vote Leave" campaign from using its name and logo on the group's literature and website.

The auto maker said the group didn't ask its permission to use the logo, and it has repeatedly asked the campaign to stop doing so.

In a statement, Nissan said use of the logo in the campaign's materials misrepresents its views.

"Our preference as a business is, of course, that the U.K. stays within Europe—it makes the most sense for jobs, trade and costs. For us, a position of stability is more positive than a collection of unknowns," Nissan Chairman and Chief Executive Carlos Ghosn said previously.
