MEXICO CITY (Dow Jones)-Mexico's auto production rose 12% in December from a year earlier to 171,616 units, as exports fueled a recovery in the sector after a deep downturn in 2009, the Mexican Automobile Industry Association, or AMIA, said Tuesday.

For the whole of 2010, auto production gained 50% to 2,260,776 units, the association known as AMIA said. Exports increased 52% to 1,859,517 autos, and domestic sales rose 8.7% to 820,406 vehicles.

Exports of cars and light trucks increased 6.6% in the final month of 2010 to 147,552 vehicles. Domestic sales rose 14% to 104,941 autos.
