mostly in the red this morning. In Europe only the FTSE has managed
to stay in the green. Traders could be practicing defensive trading
as last week's bullish run is behind them and the FOMC meeting is
looming ahead. The DAX dropped on news that the ZEW survey
indicated confidence among German investors has dropped to a new
low. In Asian markets, the Hang Sang bounced off a double top with
a high-created eight months ago to close lower. It would appear
that significant momentum would be needed to breach this level.
Expect a quiet day as trading ahead of tomorrow's Fed decision on
interest rates at 2:15 p.m. The only major economic report due out
is the September wholesales inventories, which should increase by
0.7 percent, below last period's 0.9 percent gain. Tech leader
Cisco Systems is the largest name reporting today. Analysts are
looking for the company to earn 21 cents a share, four cents better
than last year. As always, Cisco has the potential to move the
entire market, so keep your eyes pealed. Be prepared for the

OPPORTUNITIES Corporate America has enjoyed an excellent year.
Earnings among S&P 500 companies are projected to be up almost
20% by the time 2004 is over. So should you look for more of the
same trend in 2005? Not so fast, says Ken Shea, managing director
of the S&P's global equity research. Quoted in Business Week,
Shea expects profit growth to tumble down to 9% next year. Look for
the traditional "Old Economy" stocks to outperform the market. This
includes defense stocks, consumer services and financials. Don't,
however, look for oil prices to decline at any great pace. The two
main forces moving the oil market - a supply/demand crunch and a
rash of geopolitical problems - don't look like abating any time
soon. While it's true that OPEC is pumping oil at full speed, and
US reserves are up slightly, thanks to production resuming in the
key Gulf of Mexico region, several other woes still exist. Chief
among them is the full-scale military offensive currently underway
in the insurgent-held Iraqi city of Fallujah. As such, expect more
pressure on oil prices that blissfully dipped under US$50 per
barrel last week, away from the highs set in October. This isn't
good news for Americans already spending about 5% of their income
on energy costs like heating, electricity and gasoline. Pretty
steep in today's terms, but not as much as the average 8% of income
consumers set aside for such expenses during the 1980's. Receive
