Gateway Becomes First Major Vendor to Launch LTO3-Based Tape
Autoloader Storage System Businesses Now Get Double the Capacity at
a Compressed Price IRVINE, Calif., Oct. 26 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/
-- Bringing mission-critical data backup into the mainstream,
Gateway, Inc. today becomes the first major vendor to launch a tape
autoloader storage system based on the new LTO3 standard. (Logo:

Gateway(R) 823 LTO3 Autoloader, available for order today and
scheduled to begin shipping in mid-November, delivers a low-cost,
high-performance unattended tape backup solution in a 2U
form-factor. Powered by high-capacity LTO3 tape, the Gateway 823
enables mid-enterprise businesses, educational institutions and
government agencies to store 6.4 TB(1) of mission-critical data --
at an introductory price of $6,499. "Stringent HIPAA requirements
and the prevalence of increasingly dangerous viruses make reliable
data archival one of the most critical issues facing today," said
Tim Diefenthaler, senior director of servers, storage and
networking products for Gateway. "Customers can use the Gateway 823
to reliably back up almost any form of mission-critical data, from
e-mail to financial transactions to CRM. And with the Gateway 823,
they don't have to break the bank to get LTO3 tape technology."
Built to fit any standard rack-optimized server environment, the
Gateway 823 Autoloader features a single LTO3 Ultrium tape drive,
which can hold up to eight LTO3 cartridges. Each cartridge offers
800 GB of data compressed (400 GB uncompressed)(1), with
performance exceeding 66 MB per second (490 GB per hour). At
maximum capacity, the Gateway 823 stores 6.4 TB of compressed data
(3.2 TB uncompressed)(1). Compared to current LTO2 tape, the new
LTO3 standard offers double the capacity and twice the performance.
Customers with data center environments will particularly benefit
from the Gateway 823, due to the device's dense form factor and
ability to perform unattended backup directly attached to Gateway
rack-mount servers via a SCSI interconnect(2). The 823 also has
redundancy features such as a low-voltage 25 W power supply,
multiple internal fans and a patented Dynamic Power Down System,
which protects critical data in the event of a power loss. Gateway
offers Veritas Backup Exec. 9.0 for organizations needing
enterprise-level performance and Yosemite's Tapeware XE 7.0 for
smaller customers seeking an aggressively-priced local tape backup
solution. Both software packages are fully supported on the Gateway
823 as well as on all Gateway servers for use with
internal/external tape drives. Gateway includes one free LTO3
cartridge and a cleaning cartridge free of charge for customers who
purchase the 823. Gateway offers standard three-year limited
warranty/repair and 24/7 technical support via its Gateway Network
Support Center on the Gateway 823 Autoloader(3). All Gateway
technicians hold MCSE (Microsoft Certified System Engineer)
certifications -- with many holding additional certifications, such
as Novell, RedHat Linux and others. Gateway's optional four-hour,
on-site response service, provided through IBM Global Services,
gives customers a heightened level of support for maximum
uptime(3). From high-end servers to market-leading plasma displays
to comprehensive services, Gateway delivers whole-office technology
solutions, coupled with high-touch service. Serving organizations
for more than 15 years, Gateway uses its multi-channel approach to
make the purchase, use and support of technology simple. Gateway

as the University of Arizona, Harvard University, California
Highway Patrol and others. For more information on Gateway
