DIRECTV Delivers Most Soccer Coverage In The World

Underscoring its status as a playmaker in the world of sports programming, DIRECTV will thrill soccer fans by offering more exclusive soccer matches than any other provider as it kicks off its unprecedented coverage of more than 300 marquee European soccer matches from the 2009-2010 UEFA Champions League, UEFA Europa League and the Spanish first division, known as “La Liga.”

DIRECTV will bring soccer fans games that had not been previously available on any service, including up to 22 matches a week, every UEFA Champions League playoff and group stage match, every UEFA Europa League knock-out stage match including the final and at least three La Liga games every round of play – only on DIRECTV. And for the first time, soccer will have its own Mix Channel, featuring multiple matches on one screen, the same innovative mosaic technology DIRECTV employs with its exclusive NFL SUNDAY TICKET™ package and other sports services. DIRECTV joins Fox Sports en Español, FSN, Fox Soccer Channel and Setanta Sports for UEFA Champions League coverage and GolTV for UEFA Europa League.

DIRECTV customers who are fans of some of the world’s top clubs competing in the UEFA Champions League will be able to watch 60 live exclusive matches in the Group Stage of the tournament. This is in addition to those games already being broadcast by Fox Soccer Channel, Fox Sports en Español, FSN and Setanta Sports. That more than doubles the number of group stage matches ever made available to U.S. audiences for the widely-proclaimed “most elite club soccer competition in the world.” Each of the twelve matchdays during that stage, beginning on Tuesday, Sept. 15 and continuing through Wednesday, Dec. 9, will feature exclusive-to-DIRECTV live broadcasts of five of the eight games played per day.

Fans passionate about teams that will have qualified for the UEFA Europa League will also have access to unprecedented coverage of that major competition. Of the 205 total matches in the tournament, 149 will be broadcast live on DIRECTV or its partner GolTV, including 96 of a possible 144 matches in the group stage, and nearly every elimination match in the tournament, culminating in the final, to be played on May 12, 2010, in Hamburg, Germany, which will be broadcast live on DIRECTV.

For La Liga fans, DIRECTV, GolTV, and ESPN are joining forces to carry 380 total matches, with 114 of them (three per round) on DIRECTV during the 2009-2010 season.

The matches in each of the three competitions will be available on DIRECTV channels 456-470, and the Soccer Mix Channel on 461 will include UEFA Champions League and UEFA Europa League coverage.

DIRECTV will be offering all of its customers a free taste of its world-class soccer coverage with a free trial of its Sports Pack from Sept. 14-16 and Setanta Sports (Sept. 14-20), to coincide with the first two UEFA Champions League group stage match days (Sept. 15-16).
