Constellation Energy (NYSE:CEG) today announced that in
connection with its recently completed nuclear joint venture with
EDF Group, the commitment contained in the agreement to create the
joint venture has been honored and $36 million has been contributed
to the Constellation Energy Group Foundation in support of
Constellation Energy’s long-standing commitment to improving the
quality of life in communities where it has operations.
Additionally, the company intends to join the ranks of companies
that give 1 percent or more of annual operating income to support
charitable organizations and causes.
“We’re extremely pleased to be able to provide for this $36
million contribution to the Constellation Energy Group Foundation,
particularly now as so many in the communities in which we live and
work continue to face economic challenges,” said Mayo A. Shattuck
III, chairman, president and chief executive officer, Constellation
Energy. “We believe that we have a responsibility to our
communities that includes active participation both through
financial support and employee volunteer efforts. With that in
mind, we have also decided to increase our annual charitable giving
to 1 percent or more of our annual operating income. Corporate and
social responsibility is a value we embrace at Constellation Energy
and a way of life for each and every one of our employees, many of
whom volunteer their time in their communities. It is our belief
that through this contribution and the many other ways we support
our communities, we help to improve the quality of life and make a
meaningful difference in the lives of many.”
Constellation Energy demonstrates its commitment to its
communities through a wide range of programs, donations and grants
to nonprofit organizations that make an impact in the company’s key
areas of focus – energy, education, economic growth and the
environment – as well as through employee involvement in the
company’s efforts.
Energy
Constellation Energy supports organizations that offer energy
assistance, as well as provide energy conservation and education to
community members. In 2009, Constellation Energy donated $1 million
to the Baltimore Community Foundation to establish the Baltimore
Gas and Electric Company Heating System Fund, which will provide
200 new, energy-efficient furnaces to qualifying, limited-income
customers in Baltimore who are in need of a heating system
replacement. This year, Constellation Energy also participated in
the Baltimore Neighborhood Energy Challenge through the
neighbor-to-neighbor campaign, promoting energy conservation to 600
households. Additionally, Constellation Energy provided seed
funding for the United Way 2-1-1 program, a 24-hour health and
human services information and referral service hotline for
Marylanders. Through the initial pilot phase of the 2-1-1 program,
20,000 families have been connected to much-needed services
annually.
Environment
Constellation Energy contributes resources to organizations that
are making tangible strides in environmental preservation and
restoration. In November of this year, employees joined with
community members in Baltimore to plant trees as part of the
company’s commitment to the TreeBaltimore initiative. In addition
to volunteer support, Constellation Energy has pledged $300,000
over the next three years to plant 1,000 trees to help advance
TreeBaltimore’s goal of increasing the city’s tree canopy.
Education
Providing quality educational opportunities and career
development are among the most important tools to help communities
succeed long term. Constellation Energy’s contributions of time and
resources to educational programs include supporting more than 100
scholars annually and emphasizing diversity and career development
through organizations such as the CollegeBound Foundation, the
Partners in Excellence Program and other scholarship funds. Also,
Constellation Energy supports education-related organizations that
encourage students to graduate from high school and college in
order to prepare them for their future.
Economic Growth
Through financial and volunteer support, Constellation Energy
helps stimulate growth in its communities, enabling them to become
more vibrant. Constellation Energy works to revitalize its
communities through partnerships with organizations like Chesapeake
Habitat for Humanity. In 2009, Constellation Energy provided
employee talent and financial support to help build 100
energy-efficient homes for limited-income families in Baltimore.
Constellation Energy also supports economic growth though its title
sponsorship of the Constellation Energy Senior Players
Championship. Since Constellation Energy became the title sponsor
of Champions Tour-affiliated tournaments in 2003, more than $3
million has been raised for Maryland charitable organizations.
Employee Involvement
Constellation Energy employees play an integral role in helping
the company demonstrate its commitment to its communities. Thanks
to the support of employees, Constellation Energy earned the
distinction of being the largest corporate contributor to United
Way campaigns in Central Maryland, Calvert County, Md., and Greater
Oswego County, N.Y., in 2008. Additionally, Constellation Energy
employees volunteer more than 48,000 hours annually to support a
host of community organizations and programs such as the recent
transformation of the Salvation Army Boys and Girls Club of Glen
Burnie during the United Way Extreme Makeover. Volunteerism is a
core value that runs throughout the Constellation Energy family.
Through the Constellation Energy Kids initiative, children of
Constellation Energy employees have prepared 700 hoagie sandwiches
to help feed the homeless, assembled 300 baby bags for new mothers
in homeless shelters, donated books to children in homeless
shelters, created 1,500 basic needs care packages for children in
homeless shelters, assembled 1,300 care packages for Maryland
National Guard troops deployed to Iraq and raised money for local
charities during the Constellation Energy Senior Players
Championship and the Constellation Energy Classic. The initiative,
which grew out of Constellation Energy’s Take Our Daughters and
Sons to Work Day program, now provides opportunities for
Constellation Energy families to participate in monthly volunteer
activities such as creating picture frames containing welcome
messages for Chesapeake Habitat for Humanity families, restoring
Baltimore’s Clifton Park and planting, caring for and harvesting
crops at the Baltimore City Public School Great Kids farm.
