Newkirk Products Inc., which provides ID cards for health-insurance plans, disclosed a data breach that involved unauthorized access to a server containing member information.

Newkirk was part of Broadridge Financial Solutions Inc.'s $410 million purchase of DST Systems Inc.'s North America customer communications business on July 1.

The server didn't include Social Security numbers, banking or credit-card data, or medical information, the company said. The data that may have been accessed varies by insurance plan but included names, addresses and dates of birth.

Newkirk said it has no evidence that the data has been used inappropriately. About 3.3 million members of insurance plans were affected.

High-profile cyberattacks have hit companies such as Home Depot Inc. and Target Corp. in recent years. On Wednesday, not-for-profit hospital system Banner Health said it was informing about 3.7 million people of a breach.

Newkirk believes the unauthorized access first occurred on May 21, and said it discovered the issue on July 6. A forensic investigation is continuing.

The network of investor-communications company Broadridge wasn't affected as Newkirk hasn't been integrated. Newkirk said there is no evidence that any other Newkirk or DST service has been affected.
