MARKET OVERVIEW Overseas markets are offering a little encouragement this morning, as 13 of the 15 markets that we track are currently positive. The cumulative average return on the collective stands at a positive 0.969 percent. The Confederation of British Industry (CBI) indicated that the United Kingdom's manufacturing sector continued to improve in March with output volumes rising for a third consecutive month. Manufacturing output levels rose to plus 15 in March from plus 14 in February, indicating that demand continues to improve despite the strong pound. Firmer external demand has resulted in a remarkable improvement in export orders, moving that index up to a minus 7 in March, its most positive level since November 1996. The index stood at a minus 22 in February. In Spain, IBEX 35 Index looks to be putting terrorism in the rear view mirror this morning, rising from that mat and adding over 140 points. Before the market open, the Final Fourth Quarter Gross Domestic Product (GDP) estimate is expected to hold from the preliminary reading of plus 4.1 percent. Unless there is major surprise in either direction, this "old" report should have little impact on the market. Sharing the 8:30 a.m. timeslot, Initial Jobless Claims for the week ending March 20 are expected to partially reverse the prior week's 6,000 decline with a 4,000 rise. Remember that it is my (humble) opinion that the market moving reports will deal with job growth and inflation. This one deals with the loss of jobs. At 9:00 a.m., Federal Reserve Chairman Greenspan speaks on rural economic issues in Warrenton, Virginia. I am not sure if there will be a Q&A period following his speech. Just be aware that he is out and about. At 10:00 a.m., February Existing Home Sales will be released. We have no estimate on this figure, but last month sales declined by 5.2 percent. Since the Madrid bombings, jitters have prevailed, with investors rushing to sell stocks in the US, Europe and Asia. With earnings season imminent, stocks could go either way. The NASDAQ is bouncing off of its 200-day moving average and support at 1900. Daily momentum has improved but is still negative and the index has stalled just below the resistance level between 1925 and 1935. Brit Ryle at the Money Flow Matrix Trader says that while the NASDAQ is bouncing, it's not very strong and is concentrated mainly in the semiconductor stocks. And "considering these have been among the worst NASDAQ performers over the past few weeks, an oversold bounce is no big surprise. Semiconductors usually lead the NASDAQ, and the declining volume on Tuesday's sell-off is encouraging for a more sustained bounce. But there isn't yet enough evidence to suggest that this is anything other than an oversold bounce. We either need to see a move that fills the gap between 1925 and 1935, or a big volume move lower. And I put the odds for either at 50/50 -- at least for the next few days. Personally, I'd like to see another 50-point drop on the NASDAQ. That would make it very easy to go long heading into earnings." The editorial team has prepared a special FREE REPORT for you -- "America's 1,300 Fastest-Growing Companies."
