The major event today is the Fed which is expected to raise interest rates a quarter point to 2.50 percent. Expect relatively tight trading from most markets going into the announcement. The odds greatly favor the quarter point hike, so that should already be priced into the markets, what will move the markets will be how their statement is phrased. Then at 9:00 p.m. tonight President Bush will give his State of the Union address. What he says about the war in Iraq and future confrontations will have major effects on world markets tomorrow. One glance at the numbers from California, New York and New Jersey paints a grim picture, with the budget deficits currently at US$9 billion, US$4 billion and US$4 billion respectively. Many other states also sport deficits over of US$1 billion. While the situation isn't as bad as it was during the economic downturn and subsequent recession a few years ago, it's still troubling that states are struggling to gain revenue and balance budgets, given the burgeoning economic recovery. According to Stateline.org, one of the biggest reasons for this is soaring healthcare costs. In Louisiana, for example, the state is desperately trying to solve a remarkable US$1.9 billion budget gap resulting from Medicaid costs alone. This is in addition to about 20 other states attempting to plug Medicaid budget gaps. But it's not entirely surprising, given the news from the National Association of State Budget Officers that says US states had a US$7 billion shortfall in Medicaid budgets at the end of fiscal 2003 and 2004. While America's state budgets might be in the red, the same cannot be said for the ever-vibrant housing market. Figures out Tuesday showed new home sales edged up 0.1% in December. While that isn't particularly impressive, it did mean 2004 finished as the strongest year on record for new home sales, with an 8.9% jump over 2003. This comes after Freddie Mac CEO William Syron declared that the housing market has enjoyed a "tremendous run," but does not believe there is a bubble. In fact, he stated that inflation in some of the hottest US markets is starting to cool and forecast a slower 4-6% house price appreciation this year, compared with 10% in 2004.
