Denmark's prime minister on Wednesday called for a general election to be held on Nov. 1., following demands from a coalition partner.

Mette Frederiksen, who has led a social democrat minority government since 2019, was given until today to declare an election or face calls for a no-confidence vote by the social liberal party.

Social liberal party leader Sofie Carsten Nielsen made the demand during the summer, arguing that trust in the prime minister had been lost after an inquiry criticized Ms. Frederiksen for ordering the cull of Denmark's entire 17 million mink population during the Covid-19 pandemic without legal authority.

The prime minister's government had been concerned that Covid-19 could mutate and transmit between the animals and humans so ordered the cull, a move later found to have been illegal.
