Flint Hills Resources reported equipment problems and excessive
emissions over the weekend at its refinery in Corpus Christi, Texas
after lightning caused an electricity outage.
"At approximately 1:00 PM [on Saturday], a power outage caused
by a lightning strike shut down the Coker Unit Wet Gas Compressor,"
the refinery said in a statement to the Texas Commission on
Environmental Quality. It said the incident also caused emissions
that lasted more than one hour.
"After power was restored, the Wet Gas Compressor was started
up, ending the flaring event," the refinery said.
Wichita, Kan.-based Flint Hills operates an East and West plant
in Corpus Christi, and this incident happened at the West plant.
The overall refinery complex has a capacity of around 300,000
barrels a day.
