The Belgian economy grew in the fourth quarter despite a rise in coronavirus cases, the National Bank of Belgium said Friday.

The country's gross domestic product grew 0.5% compared with the previous quarter, the central bank said.

It also revised data for the third quarter of 2021. Following the revision, the data showed that Belgium's GDP grew 2.0% compared with a first estimate of 1.8% growth.

An initial estimate shows that, in comparison to the previous quarter, value added in the fourth quarter rose 3.3% in industry and 0.3% in the services sector, while it was down 0.6% in the construction industry, the report said.

Compared with the fourth quarter of 2020, the economy grew 5.6%, the National Bank of Belgium said.

Over 2021 as a whole, GDP rose 6.1%, the National Bank of Belgium said.
