Merck KGaA said Tuesday that it has met the environmental and
climate targets it had set for 2020.
The German pharmaceuticals and chemicals company said it has
lowered the greenhouse-gas emissions associated with its offices
and factories by 25% from a 2006 baseline. It had targeted a
reduction of 20% by 2020 and aims to achieve carbon neutrality over
the next 20 years, it said.
Merck also said it cut its consumption of water at the sites it
has in water-stressed areas by 27% relative to a 2014 baseline,
ahead of the 10% reduction it had planned.
In addition, the company said it donated about 226 million
tablets to treat a tropical disease called schistosomiasis, which
mostly affects poor and rural communities.
It donated 2 million face masks to healthcare providers and
carried out community projects worth 54 million euros ($64.27
million), Merck said.
