The European Union said chip maker Broadcom Inc.'s planned $61 billion acquisition of VMware Inc. may restrict competition in the market for certain hardware components that interoperate with VMware's software.

The European Commission, the EU's executive arm, said Wednesday that it had informed Broadcom of its "preliminary view" after launching a probe into the deal late last year over concerns the takeover would allow Broadcom to restrict competition. The deal has also attracted attention from other regulators, including the U.K.'s Competition and Markets Authority.

A statement of objections is a formal step in an EU investigation to inform companies of objections raised against them, though it doesn't prejudge the outcome of an investigation.
