Amazon.com Inc. (AMZN) said Monday that it is aiming for 50% of its shipments to have no net release of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere by 2030.

The online retailer has called the project Shipment Zero and said it is part of its goal to power Amazon's global infrastructure using only renewable energy.

Amazon hasn't shared specific details about the project but said it plans to publish its company-wide carbon footprint along with "related goals and programs" later this year.

"This follows an extensive project over the past two years to develop an advanced scientific model to carefully map our carbon footprint to provide our business teams with detailed information helping them identify ways to reduce carbon use in their businesses," Dave Clark, Amazon's senior vice president of worldwide operations, said.

Previous sustainable initiatives by Amazon include its Frustration-Free Packaging program--aimed at reducing packaging waste--and its Ship in Own Container initiative.

The company has six solar farms in Virginia and three wind farms in Indiana, North Carolina and Ohio.
