                    Scotia Mine - Final Development Approval

Van Dieman Mines plc ("Van Dieman" or "The Company"), the AIM listed mining
company which is developing tin and sapphire mines in Tasmania, Australia is
pleased to announce that Dorset Council has now formally advised approval of the
Company's Development Application and Environmental Management Plan (DPEMP) for
its Scotia mine to the Department of Tourism Arts and Environment (DTAE).

In addition to the Council's formal approval, the Company has received further
permit approvals indicating that permitting is now moving ahead at a faster rate
than expected. Specifically the approvals recently received are Threatened
Species Permits TFL 07091 and TFL 07118, Fauna Permit TFL 07119, Temporary Water
Use Licence and Water Use Licence from the Department of Primary Industry and
Water (DPIW) and Weed Management Plan, Construction Environmental Management
Plan and Fire Management Plan approvals from DTAE.

The final approval by Council will also trigger the issue of the remaining
permits required under Tasmanian State Government Legislation, specifically:

   * Approval from the Forest Practices Authority of the Forest Practice Plan

   * Permit to Commence Construction from Department of Tourism, Arts and the
     Environment (DTAE)

   * Approval to Construct Dams from the Advisory Committee on Large Dams
     (ACDC) Section of DPIW

Clive Trist, Managing Director, Van Dieman Mines, commented:

"The delay in proceeding has been aggravated severely by the bureaucratic
process, but we have used the additional time to advantage: we have been able to
refine the equipment to improve the efficiency, to better define the parameters
of the mine operation and to put in place marketing agreements for the tin,
sapphires and spinel mine products. We are pleased and relieved finally to have
been granted formal approval and we are now in a position to develop the mine
site and commence operations."
