OMI INTERNATIONAL PLC
ACQUISITION OF TRANSFORMER RECTIFIER BUSINESS FROM ABB

OMI International plc ("OMI"), the UK software, design and
engineering solutions group, today announces that it has
agreed, subject to contract, to acquire the Transformer
Rectifier Product line from ABB Power T&D Company Inc.,
Virginia USA, which is part of the international engineering
giant ABB Asea Brown Boveri Ltd for a consideration of
US$853,000 (#505,000), payable in cash upon completion.

Transformer Rectifiers provide the energy source for power
station precipitators and are currently produced by the Group's
UK Plant Control company, Castlet, based in Lincoln. They have
been successfully supplied to its world-wide customers such as
Mitsubishi, Sumitomo and Walther for many years and will now be
supplemented by power generation customers previously served by
ABB Power T&D Company in the USA.

The acquisition of this business also enables OMI to continue
to develop its world-wide Transformer Rectifier manufacturing
capability and complements those products offered by Forry
Inc., purchased on 25th November, 1997, and Redkoh Inc.,
purchased in January 1997.

The effect on trading for the remaining four months of the year
will be positive and it is expected to make a significant
contribution to the Group's profitability in future years.

Commenting on the acquisition, Richard Duggan, Executive
Chairman, said:

"The acquisition of ABB's Transformer Rectifier product line
gives us a stronger presence in the key American power station
market. We anticipate that this, added to our recent
acquisition of Forry Inc., will give us a larger share of that
market and increase our global penetration. Following on from
the recent sale of our Optronics division and the greater focus
being achieved throughout the business, this acquisition is the
latest in a series of additions that will deliver greater
shareholder value."

Notes to Editors:

Fossil fuelled power stations emit dust as a BI product of
burning fuel. To minimise the amount entering the atmosphere
the exhaust gases from the power station pass through a
precipitator. The precipitator traps the particles by way of
an electrical charge and a sophisticated software control
system.

A transformer rectifier (TR. sets) is the energy source for
the precipitator. The software control systems and TR. sets
are designed and manufactured by Castlet for use world-wide,
whilst software control systems only sets are designed and
manufactured by Redkoh and Forry for the USA. ABB
manufactures TR. sets for the USA market.

Fossil fuelled power station construction is forecast to
continue to grow for the foreseeable future, particularly in
the Far East. Additionally, there is a trend towards the
tightening of particulate emission standards in the USA and
world-wide with an inevitable demand for retrospective
upgrades.
