London  & Edinburgh announces that it received notice yesterday,  in
accordance  with the provisions of section 198 of the Companies  Act
1985,  that following the Company's Placing and Open Offer announced
on  31  March  2000, Norwich Union plc has an interest in  4,703,001
ordinary  shares  of  5  pence  each in  the  Company,  representing
approximately  6.04  per cent of the issued  share  capital  of  the
Company.  The holding is registered in Norwich Union Life & Pensions
B a/c.
