Vinci said Thursday that it has been awarded the first design-build contract as part of a larger consortium for a section of the Grand Paris Express, a major transport project in the region of Paris.

The contract, worth 2.71 billion euros ($3.02 billion), covers the first section of Line 15 West, the French construction company said.

The project entails the design and construction of 14 kilometers of tunnels, five underground stations and 16 service buildings, Vinci said.

It will link the western Parisian metro station Pont de Sevres with the French capital's La Defense financial district.

The consortium includes several of Vinci's companies including Vinci Construction and Vinci Energies.

The transport line is expected operational at the end of 2031, Vinci said.
