LONDON--Impala Platinum Holdings Ltd. (IMP.JO) said Thursday it will lose about 2,800 ounces of platinum per day during a strike at its operations in the Rustenburg region of South Africa.

Just 10% of miners were on the job Thursday, Impala said, adding that it won't pay those taking part in the strike.

It urged the union involved to help ensure the walkout doesn't turn violent. The mining company said it has received assurances from Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union that it will ensure discipline among its members.

"The company also remains committed to further engagement in an effort to ensure a workable solution for all, which will secure the sustainability of the business and preserve jobs as far as possible," Impala said in a statement.
