Local Hero contest invited Newfoundlanders to nominate a deserving individual for the chance to win $20,000

ST. JOHN'S, Dec. 18, 2017 /CNW/ - Last summer, Lamb's Rum set out to find Newfoundland's most deserving Local Hero. The contest invited Newfoundlanders to nominate someone who has gone above and beyond to make their community a better place. The grand prize for the most deserving individual is a $20,000 cheque, a song dedicated to them by local folk band Rum Ragged, and a party thrown in their honour.

Over the course of the contest, Lamb's Rum received over 600 stories about people giving back to their communities, supporting each other through tough times, and demonstrating dedication for making the world around them a better place.

Among the hundreds of Local Heroes in Newfoundland, Elizabeth Kearney's story stood out, and she has been declared the contest winner. The winning entry was submitted by her daughter, Sandra McGrath.

Here is Elizabeth Kearney's story:

"In a small community in rural Newfoundland, which is dying more and more every day, Elizabeth tries very hard to keep the community spirit alive: by herself. From planning "come home" year celebrations, garden parties, and school reunions, she is the person who makes sure there is money made so the community still has street lights and can upkeep the community hall and church. Without her, our tiny community would be gone. What better way to show her our appreciation than by throwing a party in her honour and letting the rest of rural Newfoundland know that it is possible to keep your community spirit still alive, even if you're a 'one woman show'." – Sandra McGrath

"What we've learned from the results of this contest is that Newfoundland is truly full of heroes! But no one is more deserving of the prize than Elizabeth," says Alice Carroll, Lamb's Rum Brand Manager, Corby Spirit and Wine. "She's a true hero who just wants to keep the spirit of the community alive, and does it all herself without expecting anything in return."

Elizabeth will be sharing the $20,000 grand prize with her daughter, Sandra, who nominated her. A party will be thrown for her in the New Year, and local folk band Rum Ragged has written a song in her honour, listen here: www.lambslocalhero.ca.

About Lamb's Rum

Lamb's is a premium-quality rum founded in 1849 by Alfred Lamb. At a time where others squeezed sugar beets to make their rum, Alfred defined his rum as the spirit distilled from pure sugar cane. Today, Newfoundland is Lamb's Nation. Lamb's Palm Breeze is the number one selling spirit across the province, outselling the closest competitor 5 to 1. Lamb's has been the bestselling spirit brand in Newfoundland for over 30 years and can be found every summer at the iconic George Street Festival in St. John's.
