Baltimore Gas and Electric Continues Restoring Natural Gas Service
to Overlea-Fullerton Area Gas Mains Cleared of Majority of Water
BALTIMORE, Oct. 27 /PRNewswire/ -- Baltimore Gas and Electric
Company (BGE), a subsidiary of Constellation Energy (NYSE:CEG),
today announced that it has restored natural gas service to more
than 60 percent of the roughly 1,900 customers affected by last
Saturday's outage. Of the more than 1,200 customers whose service
has been restored, about 175 have been found to have water damage
requiring the services of a certified contractor. The utility
announced yesterday that it expects to restore customers each day
until service is fully restored by late Friday. "The fact that
we've cleared the gas mains of the majority of water is a
significant milestone," said E. Frank Bender, vice president of gas
operations for BGE. "We sincerely appreciate the patience of our
customers as we work round the clock to restore their natural gas
service. As previously stated, where we can relight pilot lights
after inspecting both meters and household appliances, we will do
so, but at no time will we compromise the safety of our customers
or our employees." As of this morning, BGE had pumped approximately
50,000 gallons of water from its gas mains. In order to effect full
restoration and reintroduce natural gas into the system, mains must
be free of water. Throughout the day today, BGE and out-of-state
utility crews will continue to go door-to-door in order to inspect
individual meters and household appliances which may have been
damaged by water that entered the gas mains. In those instances
where a gas-fed appliance is found to be damaged by water, BGE will
replace the meter at the home. Customers are further advised to
have gas lines and damaged appliances in their homes and businesses
inspected by a licensed contractor, and to work with their
insurance companies to address any financial claims. BGE cannot
make repairs to customers' appliances. Assisting BGE in relighting
appliance pilots are personnel from several neighboring utilities,
including Washington Gas Light, Columbia Gas, Conectiv Power
Delivery, Philadelphia Gas Works and Pennsylvania Power and Light
Company (PPL). BGE is a member of Constellation Energy (NYSE:CEG),
a Fortune 500 integrated energy company based in Baltimore.
