Canadian National Railway Co. and Caterpillar Inc. have
partnered with Renewable Energy Group Inc. to test high-level
renewable fuel blends, the companies said Wednesday.
The Canadian railroad said it will test fuel blends that include
both biodiesel and renewable diesel.
The efforts are in support of the company's sustainability
goals, and part of a portfolio of initiatives to meet its 2030
emissions targets.
Canadian National Railway said trials and qualifications of up
to 100% bio-based diesel fuel is an important step in reducing
greenhouse gas emissions from its existing locomotive fleet while
alternative propulsion technologies are being developed.
"This program will allow CN and Progress Rail to better
understand the long-term durability and operational impacts of
renewable fuels on locomotives, especially in cold weather and plan
needed modifications to fully leverage their usage over the next
decade," Canadian National Railway said.
