A hearing that was expected to go poorly for Facebook Inc. lived
up to expectations. Among the key takeaways:
--Top lawmakers said they would redouble their efforts to
modernize the 1998 law governing websites that gather data on kids,
the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act.
--They held out hope that Facebook finally would take its own
steps to address its issues with kids. But not much.
--Finally, the Facebook executive who testified, global safety
head Antigone Davis, largely succeeded in sticking to the company
line that the company's internal research had been misinterpreted,
while deflecting many of the senators' tougher questions. But her
tactics might have cost Facebook goodwill in Congress at what could
be a crucial time.
