  • Registry databases allow caregivers to track special health concerns of veterans
  • Represents follow-on contract for Veterans Administration
  • Harris positioned to provide maintenance and technology upgrades to registries it developed

Harris Corporation (NYSE: HRS), an international communications and information technology company, has been awarded a contract by MED Trends, Inc. to continue developing national patient registries for U.S. military veterans.  The new contract, with a 12 month base period and two 12 month option periods, is a follow-on to the original contract awarded to Harris in October 2008.

For the original contract, Harris developed three new registries: Traumatic Brain Injury Registry, Defense and Veteran Eye Injury Registry, and Embedded Fragments Registry.  Currently in the process of being deployed, these registries will utilize the latest industry practices, design methods, and state-of-the-art development techniques.  Under the new contract, Harris will maintain and improve the existing registries' infrastructures and develop new registries based on other veteran-centric conditions.

The Veterans Health Administration (VHA) Registries Program allows healthcare providers to access patient information from connected databases across the spectrum of veteran-specific health conditions, such as traumatic brain injury, embedded fragments, tissue implants, and eye trauma.  The registries track patient data and all treatment information relevant to a particular condition.  With single-point access to comprehensive condition information, doctors have ready access to more information integrated at the point-of-care for more accurate treatment of veterans and monitoring of their long-term health care plans and outcomes.

"Harris has partnered with the VHA over the last two years to establish the Registries Program by architecting the technical framework, enhancing legacy registries applications, and developing three new registries," said Jim Traficant, vice president and general manager, Harris Healthcare Solutions.  "These registries allow the VHA to remain at the leading edge of healthcare delivery by integrating data-driven treatment practices into the clinical workflow -- optimizing care and improving health outcomes for our nation's heroes."
