U.S. air-safety regulators have mandated changes in cockpit
procedures to combat potentially dangerous malfunctions of
automated landing systems on all Boeing Co. 787 jetliners.
The directive is slated to become effective in two weeks and
calls for pilots to intervene and abandon landing approaches if
automation on board fails to properly align aircraft with
navigation aids on the ground.
According to the Federal Aviation Administration, without such
manual commands aircraft could descend on incorrect paths without
clear-cut cockpit warnings.
In issuing the mandate, the FAA acted without first seeking
public comment because of the serious safety implications. The
order applies to more than 140 jets registered in the U.S., and
eventually is expected to cover hundreds of additional planes
globally.
