Arizona School District Orders SmartMusic Student Subscriptions

Business Wire
MakeMusic, Inc. (Nasdaq:MMUS) announced today the receipt of an
order for 3,000 SmartMusic student subscriptions from the Tucson
Unified School District (TUSD). This is in addition to 70
SmartMusic teacher subscriptions the school district purchased in
April 2007. TUSD is widely recognized for its leadership and
innovation in arts education as evidenced by its ongoing commitment
to the Opening Minds Through the Arts (OMA) project. OMA, which
began as a pilot program within TUSD in 2001, is a nationally
recognized research-based program that integrates the arts into
teaching reading, writing, math and science in public elementary
and middle schools. OMA has grown to include 17,000 students,
including 35 elementary and two middle schools within TUSD, and has
received significant national attention and funding. Independent
assessment has proven that OMA improves both test scores and
teacher effectiveness. By adopting SmartMusic, TUSD hopes to
further improve teacher effectiveness and student development as
well as document student progress. SmartMusic gives music educators
the ability to guide how and what students practice, and SmartMusic
Impact enables teachers to easily assign and grade assignments for
all students. This helps solve the challenge of meeting assessment
and accountability requirements and was a significant contributing
factor to TUSDs purchase decision. MakeMusic is refining sales and
marketing strategies to focus significant efforts on selling the
SmartMusic solution to school districts. These efforts will be
supported with district pricing incentives, additional sales
personnel and lead-generation marketing. In addition, MakeMusic
will continue to invest in creating new repertoire to expand the
content within SmartMusic. We greatly admire Tucson Unifieds
leadership in arts integration and are delighted to have this
opportunity to work with them as they incorporate SmartMusic into
their curriculum, stated Ron Raup, president and chief operating
officer. We see this purchase as an early indication of the value
represented by the combination of SmartMusic and SmartMusic Impact.
This is a viable solution for districts contemplating the challenge
of easily and objectively assessing student progress. For more

OMA Founded on scientific findings about musics role in brain
development and education, Opening Minds Through the Arts (OMA) is
a leader in a national movement to integrate arts education with
core curriculum. OMA began in the 2000-2001 school year as a pilot
project at three elementary schools in the Tucson Unified School
District (TUSD). In the five years since, OMA has grown to 35
elementary and two middle schools within TUSD, is being introduced
into other Arizona schools, and has received significant national
attention and funding. Independent assessment has proven that OMA
improves both test scores and teacher effectiveness. Most
important, OMA students from disadvantaged environments are
starting to close the gap in academic performance and are now
surpassing both state and national standards in all tested areas.
