University of California, Berkeley Selects Unified Communications
Software from Interactive Intelligence INDIANAPOLIS and BERKELEY,
Calif., July 18 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- The University of
California, Berkeley has purchased unified communications software
from Interactive Intelligence Inc. (NASDAQ:ININ) to give advanced
messaging capabilities to faculty, staff and students campus-wide.
(Logo: http://www.newscom.com/cgi-bin/prnh/19990914/IILOGO ) The
software, called Communite(R), will replace the university's
existing Digital Sound voice mail system and give subscribers
features such as single- number find me/follow me services, unified
messaging, presence management and faxing. The university elected
to replace its aging voice mail system in order to unify its
existing messaging systems, as well as upgrade and integrate its
legacy systems, while adding advanced messaging features and
management capabilities, according to Cliff Frost, Director of
Communication and Network Services for the University of
California, Berkeley. "Our goal is to use Communite to migrate to
open standards and add features beyond basic voice mail to allow
for 'anywhere, anytime, anyway' communications," Frost said.
Following an initial request for proposals, the university selected
Communite for an on-site technical trial. Communite passed the
trial and the university licensed the software in April 2005.
Working with Unisys for implementation support, the university is
currently performing system configuration and testing, and plans to
go into live production with Communite this fall. Live production
will initially consist of migrating the university's 10,000 faculty
and administrative staff voice mail subscribers to Communite, and
in 2006 offering the new services to residence hall students. "We
currently have three students to a room, and they all have to share
a phone," Frost said. "Communite will enable each student to have
his or her own individual phone number, which can be used to route
callers to their respective dorm room phone, cell phone, or the
phone of their choosing." Live production will also include
integration to several of the university's existing communications
systems, according to Terri Kouba, Communication and Network
Services Systems Developer for the University of California,
Berkeley. "In addition to integrating Communite to our Centrex and
Nortel PBX systems, we will also be integrating it with our
centralized e-mail system, CalMail, our iPlanet LDAP directory, and
our Kerberos security system for access via Web pages," Kouba said.
"The fact that Communite can integrate so seamlessly with our
existing infrastructure further underlines the benefits of an open,
software-based architecture." The university plans to use five
Communite servers housed at its state-of- the-art data center,
equipped with redundant network connectivity and high- availability
network service, in addition to an off-site passive message store
for optimum disaster recovery protection. The final phase of
production is planned for 2006/2007, when the university will offer
Communite to its entire campus community of 50,000 people. "The
University of California, Berkeley has already done a great job in
its trial phase of exploiting Communite's unique benefits,
including its ability to give an organization the choice to deploy
voice mail for some users, and unified messaging for others,
without managing two separate systems and creating silos of
communication," said President and Chief Executive Officer for
Interactive Intelligence, Dr. Donald E. Brown. "With its phased- in
approach and campus environment, the university's deployment also
underlines our efforts to make Communite the ideal choice for
large, multi- site organizations that want to incrementally scale
to as many as hundreds of thousands of users without forklift
upgrades or the need to re-write applications." About University of
