Earnings season is in full swing and IBM came to the plate and beat
analyst forecasts by four cents last night. For the second-quarter
Big Blue earned $1.16 a share on revenues of $23.2 billion. The
shares initially popped higher by about one-percent but fell back
to near unchanged after investors realized that the sales numbers
were beneath the $23.35 billion that was expected. CFO Mark
Loughridge did support forecasts for the remainder of the year and
added that the IT industry should have its best year since 2000.
The dollar gained on the euro and hit one-month highs against the
yen yesterday after a regional manufacturing report illustrated
stronger-than- expected growth, changing perceptions of a slowing
U.S. economy. All eyes will be on the CPI report, which is due out
at 8:30 a.m. this morning. The consensus is for the report to come
in at a 0.2-percent advance versus last period's 0.6-percent
increase. The only other economic report on tap for today is the
July preliminary University of Michigan Consumer Confidence Index
at 10:00 a.m. Economists are expecting the results to come in at
97.0 above last period's 95.6. Be prepared for the investing week

OPPORTUNITIES While terrorism that causes physical death and
destruction is deplorable, an equally shameful offense is the
white-collar crime that claimed ten million victims in the United
States alone last year, robbing them of $50 billion. The fight
against the rapidly-growing epidemic of identity theft gained
momentum yesterday with President George Bush signing a bill that
requires stiff jail terms for criminals convicted of using or
selling fake identities to commit terrorist acts and various other
crimes. This promises to be good for consumers, America and,
naturally, the companies spearheading the campaign to wipe it out.
After all, the criminals that prey on often unsuspecting victims
and run up thousands of dollars in costs are, as Bush said,
literally "stealing financial reputations" by damaging credit
ratings. As a sign of the bill's importance, it passed thanks to
bipartisan sponsors from lawmakers including Republican James
Sensenbrenner and Democrat Dianne Feinstein. Specifically, it aims
to eradicate leniency on the part of judges tempted to hand out
probation sentences, concurrent sentences, or reduced sentences for
identity theft. With the bill giving the judicial wing more freedom
to punish this type of crime, part of the bill includes a law
imposing compulsory five- year prison terms for felons convicted of
manufacturing/selling fake IDs to help terrorists. In other
non-terrorism-related cases, a two-year jail sentence would apply.

problem of identity theft in America. Read the FREE REPORT here
