Fairchild Semiconductor (NYSE: FCS) -- Company Honored in Pollution
Prevention Category for Invention and Use of
Environmentally-Friendly Detergent Used in the Manufacturing of
Wafers -- Achieves Goals Established by Maine STEP-UP Program
Fairchild Semiconductor (NYSE: FCS) received the Maine Governor's
Award for Environmental Excellence and has been honored in the
"Pollution Prevention" category for the invention and use of an
environmentally-friendly detergent to remove ink from wafers at the
company's South Portland facility. With this new approach,
Fairchild achieved yet another one of its commitments to the
Step-Up Program (Smart Tracks for Exceptional Performers and Upward
Performers) by reducing VOC (volatile organic compound) emissions
to the lowest possible level with current technology. "We're very
pleased to accept this award as recognition for Fairchild's
tireless efforts to reduce emissions and the impact to the
environment," said Steve Goodwin, Fairchild's Environmental, Health
and Safety manager. "In addition to the creation of our
environmentally-friendly detergent to replace solvents, we have
reduced energy usage by nearly $15,000 annually, lowered the amount
of material used and waste generated, and reduced Green House Gas
emissions. Fairchild has been recognized globally for the company's
efforts to protect the environment, and we will continue to improve
our efforts as a responsible global corporate citizen." A member of
the STEP-UP Program since 2002, Fairchild was honored for the
second time for their commitment to sustainability concepts and
environmental and business planning. Fairchild received the award
from Governor John Baldacci and Commissioner of the Department of
Environmental Protection, Dawn Gallagher. Steve Goodwin, Roger
Doherty, staff engineer and Don Harmon, senior electronics
technician accepted the award for Fairchild. The Governor's Awards
for Environmental Excellence are presented to businesses,
organizations and individuals whose outstanding efforts exemplify
and promote environmental excellence. The STEP-UP Program
recognizes Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) STEP-UP
facilities that have met or exceeded their agreement goals.
