two of the 15 markets that we track are showing gains. In London,
the FTSE was down more than one percent as traders were scrunching
up their sandwich wrappers and turning their focus to the second
half of the day. Whatever market strength there is lies today in
Asia. The November futures contract on sweet crude oil (CL/X5 -
64.12) moved 0.93 percent higher on Wednesday. The price well
within striking distance of the 65 level again but, from a
technical perspective, I notice that the 10-day moving average
capped the upside yesterday, and it will be interesting to see if
that behavior is repeated today. Get Free Stock Picks from Bernie

OPPORTUNITIES The only way to describe the recent Wall Street
trading action is anxious and jittery. But why? The American
Capitalist financial investment group points to inflationary fears
as one of the big reasons. But they also cite a fast change in
thinking -- from the familiar Fed refrain "inflationary pressures
are well-contained" to a Fed so worried about those "inflationary
pressures" that it has embarked on a bout of interest rate hikes
and driven rates closer to the so-called "neutral level." As
financial commentator at the 247profits Group Brit Ryle asks:
"What's going on? Has there suddenly been a significant shift in
the Fed's definition of inflation? I don't think so. Actually, I
think it has more to do with Greenspan's definition of 'legacy.'
The Chairman is playing for the history books now. And it seems
pretty clear that he'd rather be remembered for inflation fighting
than bubble-blowing." On a related theme, it appears inflation
hawks are succeeding in breaking Ben Bernanke's lock on the Fed
Chairmanship. The word circulating around Washington and Wall
Street at the moment is "cronyism" -- the thought that Bernanke may
have pushed a little too hard and got too close to the White House
as he vies for the position. Many believe he's simply the latest in
a line of Bush "insiders" (similar to Cheney, Rumsfeld, Condoleeza
Rice and Harriet Miers) who were chosen for major roles when the
President tired of the selection process. The net has suddenly been
cast wider again -- and substantially so, with Bush claiming that
he hasn't "personally" seen any of the names on the list of
potential nominees. Quoted on MSNBC, Mesirow Financial chief
economist Diane Swonk says, "He's got to be even more careful
today. He has burned through a lot of political capital. He's got
to put someone in who is going to be a slam-dunk. There is a
growing possibility Bush will nominate 'none of the above'
[Bernanke, Glenn Hubbard or Martin Feldstein]." Read more analysis
