Fairchild Semiconductor (NYSE: FCS) recently hosted the annual
Northeast Corporations for Climate Action meeting at the company's
Western Avenue plant. Organized by Clean Air-Cool Planet (CA-CP), a
non-profit organization based in Portsmouth, New Hampshire that is
dedicated to finding and promoting solutions to global warming, the
meeting reviewed the federal energy bill, The Northeast Regional
Greenhouse Gas Initiative and the Governor's Carbon Challenge.
CA-CP works with companies to save energy and reduce greenhouse
gases. Fairchild has been lauded globally as an environmentally
friendly company because of its significant efforts to protect air
and water quality and to reduce its carbon emissions. As part of
the CA-CP annual meeting, Fairchild provided a tour of the South
Portland manufacturing plant, during which the company showcased a
number of projects designed to reduce GHG emissions by reducing
electrical and fuel consumption. For example, the attendees saw
first hand how Fairchild makes chilled water during the "heating
season" by using the outside air to cool water instead of the
alternative approach of running electric chillers. In addition,
panelists from Fairchild explained how the company plans to
continue voluntarily reducing its carbon emissions through
commitments it made with the EPA Performance Track Program, The
Maine Department of Environmental Protection Step-Up Program and
Climate Leaders. Featured speakers included Susan Tierney, a former
assistant secretary for policy in the U.S. Department of Energy,
and Dawn Gallagher, commissioner of The Maine Department of
Environmental Protection. Participating companies included Poland
Spring, Tom's of Maine, TD Banknorth, NA and Staples. About
