This week, the halls of more than 35 Sanford-Brown campuses
across the country might not have the typical hustle and bustle of
a normal school day. That’s because from Oct. 17 – Oct. 21,
Sanford-Brown students, faculty, and administrators will be helping
ensure their own community members make health a priority through a
variety of volunteer activities. This year marks the second annual
Give Back Week at Sanford-Brown – an initiative designed to both
enhance family health education and provide service learning
opportunities for Sanford-Brown students.
Whether its massages for local firefighters by Massage Therapy
students, or mammograms and breast cancer awareness education by
students training in Diagnostic Medical Sonography – students will
utilize their hard-earned skills to make sure families are armed
with the knowledge and resources they need to lead a healthy
lifestyle. While all campuses spend a week every fall focused on
community health and wellness initiatives, students at
Sanford-Brown “give back” all year round.
“We know that in order to be skilled, caring professionals, our
students need hands-on experience in real-life situations, and
there’s no better way to earn that than working with people in
their local communities,” said Todd Prehm of Sanford-Brown
Colleges. “It’s through programs like this that our students become
more than healthcare specialists and trusted healthcare partners –
they become role models.”
Throughout the week, students, faculty and administrators at
Sanford-Brown campuses across the country will work to match the
students’ strengths with community needs, and give back in a
variety of ways:
- Columbus Campus – Kidney Disease
Early Evaluation Information Session at Eldon Ward YMCA; Oct. 18, 9
a.m. – 3 p.m.
- Dearborn Campus – “Be The Match”
Bone Marrow Drive on Dearborn campus; Oct. 19, 11 a.m. – 7
p.m.
- Iselin Campus – “Drugs Hurt”
Poison Prevention and Medicine Safety Puppet Show at Goddard Day
School; Oct. 20, 10 a.m. ET
- Boston Campus – Women and Heart
Disease Information Session on Boston campus; Oct. 17 – Oct. 20, 3
p.m.
- Garden City Campus – Early
Detection & Mammography Information Session at Garden City
Women’s Health Long Island Locations; Oct. 20, 10 a.m. – 2 p.m.

Give Back Week is just one example of the specialized, hands-on
education Sanford-Brown students receive both in the classroom and
through their clinical and experiential training. Schools offer a
number of programs to support the diverse educational needs of
students in the allied healthcare fields through unique,
career-focused service learning opportunities. These programs allow
students to take their classroom skills and knowledge into the
community to address critical health needs.
“It’s gratifying for our students to be able to showcase their
talents while also using their skills to benefit their hometowns
and local communities,” Todd Prehm continued. “And with the service
learning opportunities built into our curriculum, our graduates are
prepared to enter the workforce with the technical skills necessary
in their chosen field and the experience needed to build trusting
relationships with both doctors and patients.”
