--The U.S. State Department on Monday approved a possible sale
of $2.2 billion of arms and military equipment to Taiwan, Reuters
reports.
--Last month, the Chinese Foreign Ministry criticized the
possible sale and asked that the U.S. halt it, the report said.
--The Pentagon said the principal contractors on the sale would
be Raytheon Missile Systems, and added "The proposed sale of this
equipment and support will not alter the basic military balance in
the region."
