WASHINGTON,
June 28, 2017
/PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The nonprofit, nonpartisan
Coalition to Transform Advanced Care (C-TAC) announced today the
new "Campaign to Transform Advanced Care."
The Campaign will accelerate the movement to provide
people living with advanced illness and their families more
person-centered care through policy advocacy, help for family
caregivers, and support for state and community
organizations.
The need for the Campaign comes from a rapidly aging
population– the number of older Americans will double by 2060 – and
their need for appropriate care that, under present conditions,
will either be unavailable or too costly for many
people.
"We can no longer ignore that the healthcare system is not
yet equipped to provide the level of advanced care needed for our
aging population," said Bill
Novelli, Co-Chair of the C-TAC board. "Through this
Campaign, we and our partners are committed to ensuring that people
with advanced illness receive comprehensive, high quality care that
is consistent with their goals and values and honors their
dignity."
C-TAC, supported by the Cigna Foundation, also released
consumer data on family caregivers that paints an alarming picture
of the state of caregiving in America. According to the study, top
issues faced by caregivers include emotional and financial burdens
as well as struggling with information gaps around diseases and
what to expect when caring for patients. The study found that
caregiving has a detrimental impact on over 80 percent of
caregivers' state of mind. Additionally, more than half of
caregivers report that caring for a loved one has compromised their
career and financial security.
As a result, one of the key pillars of the Campaign
will focus on caregiving and involve creating a positive image of
caring for a loved one, developing tools that will provide
meaningful impact for caregivers, and encouraging shared and
informed treatment decisions between families and clinicians. To

"This groundbreaking Campaign is based on the power of
caregivers' voices. It facilitates collaboration with C-TAC,
experts, and organizations in the community," said Dr. Christina Stasiuk, senior medical director and
expert on health disparities at Cigna. "The goals are to highlight
the positive aspects of caregiving, make connecting to resources
easier, and provide supportive tools to simplify caregiving.
Families told us they need this help. This Campaign provides
them with what they need."
From its history working with the issue, C-TAC knows what
works and is uniquely situated in the movement to transform
advanced care. By working with its large and diverse membership
network that ranges from payers and providers to faith and
community leaders, C-TAC will continue to drive change through the
Campaign.
