M/A-COM is First and Only Land Mobile Radio Supplier to Receive 'SAFETY Act' Qualification from the DHS DENVER, Aug. 17 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- M/A-COM, a business unit of Tyco Electronics and a worldwide leader of critical radio communication systems, today announced that the company's NetworkFirst Land Mobile Radio (LMR) interoperability solution is the first and only LMR technology to be officially designated as a Qualified Anti-Terrorism Technology under the Department of Homeland Security's SAFETY Act -- a designation retroactive to July 4, 2002. The SAFETY (Support Anti-terrorism by Fostering Effective Technologies) Act of 2002 provides liability limitations for "claims arising out of, relating to, or resulting from an act of terrorism" where qualified anti- terrorism technologies have been deployed. This designation provides significant protection to M/A-COM's customers, vendors, partners, suppliers, subcontractors -- and M/A-COM itself -- in the event of a lawsuit as a result of a terrorist attack or event. "As we deploy mission-critical radio communications systems around the country that will be used by first responders to defend our nation's citizens in the event of a terrorist attack, the legal protections afforded under the SAFETY Act are a tremendous potential benefit to our customers and suppliers," said JoAnne Dalton, Director Industry Marketing, Wireless Systems, M/A-COM. "The SAFETY Act designation for our NetworkFirst technology could significantly reduce the liability exposure faced by our customers, partners, and our entire supply chain for terrorist-related events." For further information on the DHS SAFETY Act, visit the website http://www.safetyact.gov/. The SAFETY Act is intended to support and facilitate the development and deployment of anti-terrorism technologies by creating a system of insurance and litigation management and protection. On July 13, 2005, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security accepted M/A-COM's application to designate the company's NetworkFirst Interoperability Radio Network as a qualified anti-terrorism technology under the SAFETY Act (6 U.S.C. 441-444), and the implementing regulations, 6 C.F.R. Part 25 (2004). Technologies that qualify for SAFETY Act protections include products, equipment, services (including support services), devices, and information technologies. Each must be "designed, developed, modified, or procured for the specific purpose of preventing, detecting, identifying, or deterring acts of terrorism or limiting the harm such acts might otherwise cause." M/A-COM's NetworkFirst Interoperability Solution provides an internet protocol (IP)-based network solution to public safety interoperability, thereby allowing real-time, in-place communications. NetworkFirst interconnects existing radio communications systems for interoperability based on routine and emergency needs. The solution uses an IP, packet-switched, infrastructure allowing nearly unlimited scalability -- from connecting two nearby agencies together to connecting multiple agencies across an entire state -- and even beyond.
